I don’t know about you, but I’m obsessed with finding cute and stylish clothes that don’t cost a fortune.
As a broke college student, I’ve gotten pretty good at sniffing out budget-friendly brands that still have that trendy flair.
My go-to for years was Forever 21, but lately their stuff just hasn’t been doing it for me. The quality has gone downhill and the styles are kinda “meh” in my opinion.
So I’ve been on a mission to find solid alternatives that capture that forever 21 vibe without the lets-slap-a-bunch-of-random-stuff-together-and-call-it-fashion feel.
Through tons of trial and error (emphasis on the error – hello, impulse buys gone wrong!), I’ve discovered some new affordable brands that I’m absolutely loving.
Whether you’re looking for cute basics, trendy going-out clothes, or just want to freshen up your wardrobe without breaking the bank!
Here are my top alternatives to Forever 21 that totally live up to the hype:
H&M
H&M has been around for ages, but don’t sleep on this OG budget retailer. Their basics are still some of the best, and I’m always impressed with how on-trend their seasonal styles are.
H&M collabs with the coolest designers too, so you can get runway looks for literal pennies compared to the originals. One time I found a jacket for $20 that looked almost identical to a Saint Laurent one that cost thousands. Just sayin’!
I pretty much always pop into H&M first when I’m looking for basic wardrobe staples on a budget. Their cotton tees are super soft and hold up well – the 2-packs are an amazing deal for only $12.
And their tank tops are flattering and come in every color. I also love their jeans – the high-waisted skinny ones have the perfect amount of stretch and they carry short, regular, and long lengths. At $25-$35 a pop, you can stock up on quality denim for way less.
Beyond basics, H&M is clutch for on-trend pieces that’ll elevate your wardrobe without draining your bank account.
Their dress selection is always full of winners, like flirty fit & flare shapes, slinky slip styles, and shirred sundresses galore.
Lots of cute prints and patterns too, from pretty florals to fierce animal prints. And you can accessorize with their trendy bag and shoe collections – last time I was there I scored some dupe Bottega Veneta chain mules for only $25!
ASOS
My fellow online shopping addicts, meet your match. ASOS has become my go-to one-stop shop for all things style.
The website is huge but totally user-friendly, and you can find clothes, shoes, accessories, the works. They carry affordable in-house brands as well as pricier designer goods. I like browsing their clearance section – last season’s styles up to 70% off? Yes, please!
ASOS seriously has it all – any style you’re looking for, they’ve got you covered. Their in-house brands like ASOS Design and Collusion are perfect for building an on-trend wardrobe on a budget.
I just picked up an ASOS Design corset top for only $22 and get compliments on it whenever I wear it out. Collusion is also clutch for edgy, streetwear-inspired pieces like cargo pants, graphic tees, and bomber jackets.
Beyond their own brands, ASOS stocks a huge range of outside labels, from big names like Levi’s and Adidas to smaller contemporary brands.
They offer an awesome mix of affordable fast fashion along with higher end investment pieces. For example, I’ll buy a cute $15 top from their in-house line and pair it with designer inspired jeans from Topshop. You can really curate your own unique style.
And don’t get me started on their sale section! That’s where you can score major deals on past season items. I found an Alice + Olivia dress for 80% off retail – aka just $50 instead of $250.
Their clearance section is totally addicting, but so worth it if you have time to dig. Just be sure to act fast, sizes sell out quick!
Zaful
Zaful is another online-only retailer that’s ideal for stocking up on trendy pieces at unbeatable prices.
If you have an event coming up that calls for a cute new outfit, like a party or date night, Zaful is clutch for finding stylish dresses, jumpsuits, tops and more without going over your budget.
The quality can be hit or miss, so read reviews before buying. But when you get a good piece, it’s such a steal!
One of my best Zaful finds ever was this gorgeous forest green satin slip dress that I wore to a wedding. It had a cowl neckline, spaghetti straps, and a sexy slit up one leg.
The drapey satin fabric looked so lush and expensive but I only paid $20! Everyone was shocked when I said it was from Zaful. I get so many compliments whenever I wear it.
I’d say browse their dresses and jumpsuits first if you’re looking for something special for an event.
Lots of slinky silhouettes, femme details like ruffles and florals, and fun prints like polka dots, gingham, and animal prints. And they have every color under the sun so you’re sure to find something perfect for the occasion.
Zaful’s tops and bottoms are more hit or miss for me. Make sure to read the reviews and double check the size chart.
Some runs smaller than expected. But when you land on a winner, the prices can’t be beat. I have a leopard print skirt from there that was only $8 and it’s one of my faves for nights out!
Romwe
Along the same lines as Zaful, Romwe is a budget e-tailer that churns out super stylish clothes inspired by today’s top trends (and yesteryear’s vintage vibes).
Lots of crop tops, off-the-shoulder styles, and ’80s/’90s throwbacks. I will say shipping takes a while because they ship from China, so factor that in. But their factory photos are legit and customer images don’t lie – when the clothes arrive, they look as cute IRL as they did online.
Romwe is my go-to for styling pic outfits to post on Insta. They have so many cute loungewear sets, like matching tie dye sweatshirts and shorts, or ruched leggings with cropped camis.
And you can’t beat their prices – most sets are under $20. Mixing and matching is easy too. I’ll style a graphic tee from one set with the biker shorts from another to create something totally fresh.
Beyond loungewear, Romwe is awesome for trendy going-out tops. They do the under $10 cropped cami so well – I have multiples in every color.
I style them with high-waisted jeans or layer under blazers. And their mesh bodysuits are such a fun Y2K vibe for only $12. Lots of cute prints and colors to choose from – they’re comfy enough for all-night wear too!
My only gripe with Romwe is their shoes run really small and narrow. I’ve had to return several super cute pairs that just didn’t fit.
So I stick to clothes there and get my shoes elsewhere. But overall, you can’t beat their prices and styles for social media outfit pics!
Boohoo
Boohoo is a UK-based company that’s ideal for going out looks – think bodycon dresses, strappy heels, metallic miniskirts.
Lots of Kardashian/Jenner-worthy styles for clubbing, parties, events where you want to make a statement.
I will say their dresses and tops run small, so size up (free returns come in handy if you need to swap sizes). But their clothes are super fun and on-trend. Plus Boohoo always has sales happening!
When my friends and I have a big night out planned, Boohoo is my first stop for an outfit. Their bandage dresses seriously snatch your curves. I have two go-to LBDs from them that are super flattering. Gotta love a classic bandage midi skirt too – Boohoo has every color and they’re comfy enough to dance in all night.
For tops, their asymmetric styles are so trendy right now. I have a black one shoulder top that’s blank in the back – it’s sexy without showing too much skin. And their mesh and corset designs are perfect for a night out – just make sure to size up in those.
Boohoo’s heels are gorgeous too – I just got these rhinestone mules that make any outfit look instantly glam.
And I can’t talk Boohoo without mentioning their coats and jackets! Their faux leather and satin bomber styles are so on-point.
I throw on my black satin one as soon as temps start dropping. And their longline puffer coats are perfect for winter. Bonus – they’re always adding new arrivals and have 30-50% off sales all the time!
Nasty Gal
Nasty Gal has always been one of my faves for edgy, punk rock-inspired clothes with a hint of retro appeal.
The prices are affordable, especially if you catch a good sale. They don’t just do clothes – their shoes and accessories are fire too. Definitely great if you like streetwear vibes and laidback Cali style clothing. You can really create awesome outfits by mixing and matching their clothes and accessories.
Nasty Gal nails effortless, laidback style with an edge. I’m obsessed with their utility joggers – they come in olive, black, camo prints, etc.
And they pair perfectly with graphic tees and cropped tanks. Their dresses have the coolest retro vibes too, like this ruffled off-shoulder mini I have in three colors. It looks amazing with chunky boots or sneaks.
The styling options are endless thanks to their awesome range of accessories too. I love their hats – beanies, baseball caps, bucket hats – and unique sunglasses.
And they have every bag style you could want, from cute backpacks to fanny packs to edgy hobos and totes. Plus so many cool shoes, like slip on Vans, classic Chuck Taylors, and combat boots.
Nasty Gal is ideal for going thrifting and finding rad vintage pieces to pair with their shirts, pants, and accessories.
Or you can shop their Vintage Shop for pre-loved goods if you don’t have time to hit the thrift shops. Bottom line – if you like laidback style with a dash of retro grunge, Nasty Gal is your jam!
Missguided
Another great spot for clubwear and going out outfits is Missguided. Lots of bandage dresses, faux leather minis, satin tops – you get the picture.
It’s the perfect place to get stylish pieces that make a statement. The quality is on par with the low price point, so don’t expect them to last forever. But for trendy weekend wear, Missguided kills it. They also have tall and petite sizes, which can be hard to find.
Missguided should honestly be called Miss Glam because their clothes are made for the girls who love to go all out! If I’ve got a big night planned, I always browse their newest arrivals first. Their maxi dresses with high splits are a vibe – I have a neon orange one that turns heads on the dance floor.
And their going out tops know no limits – we’re talking plunging necklines, bare backs, cut outs for days. It’s hot girl summer all year long in Missguided clothing! For real though, their mesh and strappy designs are fun and sexy if you feel like showing some skin.
Accessories are on point too. I have Missguided heels in practically every style – clear, sparkly, neon, you name it. Their bags are just as fierce, especially their micro purses that are somehow big enough to hold your phone, cards, and gloss. And don’t sleep on their jewelry – they make any outfit pop even more.
Missguided not only has the trendiest going-out looks, but they also have an awesome range of loungewear for your Netflix days.
Cozy sweats, matching sets, slouchy tees – stylish comfort is their specialty!
PrettyLittleThing
PrettyLittleThing is right up there with Oh Polly and Missguided when it comes to going-out and occasion wear.
We’re talking sequins, bright colors, bold prints, lots of mesh – you’ll definitely stand out. I’d say PrettyLittleThing runs small like Boohoo, so read reviews and consider sizing up if needed.
But overall their clothes are fun, fierce and affordable. Great for nights out and parties when you want to shine bright!
PrettyLittleThing turns up the glam factor to 10 – get ready to sparkle and shine! They do sequins better than anyone. I have this blue sequin bandeau top that instantly takes any outfit to the next level. Pair it with leather pants or distressed denim for a look that’s guaranteed to get you noticed.
And their mesh dresses are perfect for showing a hint of skin and still looking classy. I’m obsessed with this black mesh midi – it’s sexy from the front with illusion cutouts but more covered from the back. Looks way more expensive than it was!
For a full-on head-turner look, their cut out and one shoulder dresses can’t be beat. Think daring silhouettes with bold neon colors, fierce animal prints, and loads of shimmer. Next time you have a big event and want to go bold with your outfit, PrettyLittleThing is sure to deliver!
Beyond dresses, their jeans are super flattering too. The high-waisted shaping styles smooth your curves without squishing them. I get compliments whenever I wear their black rip knee skinny jeans – and they’re comfy enough for all day wear!
Mango
If Zara is slightly out of your price range, check out Mango. The styling has that same contemporary vibe but the prices are a bit lower.
Lots of minimalist, clean lines and modern silhouettes. Great for workwear that still feels fashionable. Mango’s jackets and coats are always so chic. Pricing is mid-range – more than fast fashion retailers but less than premium brands. A good happy medium for affordable style.
Mango is my new go-to for building a polished, minimalist wardrobe on a budget. Their trousers have a tailored, sophisticated look that you’d expect to spend way more on. I have a pair of high-waisted ankle pants from there that I wear on repeat – they look so sleek and expensive but were only $50. SUCH a steal!
Blazers and coats are also a specialty. I just picked up an amazing oversized gray plaid blazer for $120, which is a steal for the quality. It instantly elevates any simple tee and jeans. And their wool trench coats are perfect for winter. So much style at half the usual designer price tags.
Beyond workwear, Mango also nails casual staples like striped tees, skinny jeans, flirty dresses and more. Lots of timeless silhouettes and minimalist vibes.
Not the trendiest pieces but definitely wardrobe essentials you’ll have for seasons to come. Quality over quantity is the name of the game at Mango for sure!
Topshop
Topshop reminds me a lot of Forever 21 back in the day – super trendy pieces but better quality at an affordable price point.
I still grab basic tees and tanks from Topshop all the time because they’re comfortable, flattering and not too pricey. But they also have cute going out clothes, shoes, denim – it’s a one stop shop. Sales are epic too! The dressing rooms can be messy so try not to rage, lol. Just focus on the deals!
Topshop is my first stop when I need to restock my basic tee collection. They’re affordable at 2 for $20, super soft, and come in the cutest colors.
I have them in practically every shade. Their jeans are awesome too – I swear by the Joni style for a perfect high-waisted skinny fit. And the quality rivals pricier brands but usually around $50-60.
For going out clothes, Topshop has so many trendy options. Their slip dresses are perfect throw-on-and-go style in satin fabrics and slinky silhouettes. And such pretty lace tops to pair with your fave denim. Shoes are cute too – I’m eyeing these clear strappy heels for my next night out!
One of my favorite parts of shopping Topshop is their accessories wall. You can instantly take your outfit up a notch with their jewelry, bags, hats, sunglasses, etc.
Last time I was there I grabbed a couple trendy hair clips and a scrunchie set for only $10. Sale goods are amazing too – keep an eye out for their epic Black Friday deals!
Abercrombie & Fitch
Abercrombie has seriously glowed up in recent years. They ditched the overpowering scent and flashy logos, and have focused on stylish, quality clothes at an affordable price point.
Their jeans are my absolute fave – they carry short, regular, and long lengths so you can get the perfect fit. And such cute denim washes from classic blue to on-trend white and gray. Beyond denim, their range of tops, dresses, and sweaters is super versatile for day to night wear.
Lots of slouchy tees, wrap bodysuits, and flirty mini skirts that can be dressed up or down. I especially love their sweater collection for winter – cozy crewnecks, cardigans, waffle knits, cropped styles, and more.
And the prices are very reasonable – you can easily stock up on wardrobe staples here without breaking the bank. They frequently have 40% off sales too! Abercrombie has definitely made a major comeback and their clothes are cuter than ever.
Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters is my go-to for funky, artsy clothes you won’t find anywhere else. Lots of vintage-inspired pieces, unique details, and cool collaborations you need in your closet.
Their BDG denim range has the trendiest washes and silhouettes – from baggy boyfriend jeans to distressed skinnies with funky fraying. And so many cute matching sets in comfy lounge or streetwear vibes.
Oversized tees, bike shorts, sweaters, joggers – perfect for chill days or mixing and matching. Beyond their in-house brands, UO stocks cool lesser-known labels you won’t find everywhere. Their dress selection is especially full of hidden gems. Whether you’re into boho, grunge, artsy or edgy style, you’ll find something unique at Urban Outfitters.
Madewell
Madewell is definitely pricier than fast fashion brands, but the quality is so worth it. Their jeans are hands down my fave – they last forever and come in great modern washes. I basically only buy their high rise skinny jeans now.
Beyond denim, they have the cutest sweater styles that are comfy enough to lounge in but still look polished. Lots of fun patterns and prints too. And Madewell is known for their leather jackets – the perfect lived-in styles that only get better with age.
Their cozy tees and jumpsuits are great for weekend wear as well. If you want affordable wardrobe staples that will stand the test of time, Madewell is a solid investment.
American Eagle
American Eagle has always been one of my go-to spots for quality denim at affordable prices. They offer so many fits, washes, and styles that you’re guaranteed to find your perfect pair of jeans.
I love their classic high waisted Mom jeans as well as the curvy fits that are super flattering. And they have on-trend colors beyond blue – lots of black, gray, white, and patterned denim. Beyond jeans, their comfy basics like sweatshirts, leggings, and tees are great quality too.
I stock up on their cozy fleeces and joggers every fall. And their dresses are cute, casual styles you can dress up or down. American Eagle is awesome for affordable, everyday wardrobe essentials that last.
Uniqlo
If you’re looking for affordable basics done right, Uniqlo is the spot. Their classic tees, button-downs, turtlenecks, and sweaters are such great quality for the low prices. Lots of versatile solids, stripes, and minimalist prints to mix and match.
Their Heattech line adds warmth without bulk – perfect for cold weather layering under coats and jackets. Uniqlo’s jeans are super sleek and comfy too.
Plus awesome collabs with brands like Marimekko and iconic artists like Warhol, Basquiat, and Haring. Whether you need simple closet staples or fun graphic statement pieces, Uniqlo has you covered for less.
Zara
Zara is an exceptional fashion brand that offers a wide range of apparel models that not only keep up with the latest trends but also provide unmatched quality and comfort.
One of the reasons why Zara is a fantastic alternative to Forever 21 is its vast collection of apparel models.
Take, for instance, the “Zara Basic Trench Coat.” This classic piece adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit and is a perfect substitute for the typical outerwear you’d find at Forever 21. Zara’s trench coat is made from high-quality materials, ensuring it lasts for many seasons, unlike some fast fashion choices.
Looking for something versatile to wear to a casual get-together or a formal event? Zara’s “Flowing Jumpsuit with Belt” is the ideal choice. With its flattering design, comfortable fabric, and an adjustable belt to accentuate your waist, it’s a versatile and stylish alternative to Forever 21’s jumpsuits.
When it comes to men’s fashion, Zara has you covered as well. The “Zara Man Slim Fit Blazer” is a prime example of how Zara combines style and affordability. It’s an excellent replacement for Forever 21’s blazers, offering a sharp, tailored look without breaking the bank.
Zara understands the importance of variety in your wardrobe. The “Zara High-Rise Wide-Leg Jeans” are a fabulous alternative to Forever 21’s denim collection. These jeans are available in various washes and fit like a dream, making them a must-have for any denim lover.
If you are looking for elegant office wear, Zara’s “Pleated Trousers” collection is second to none. These trousers are not only comfortable but also stylish and make for an excellent choice when compared to the limited selection you might find at Forever 21.
But Zara’s appeal isn’t limited to clothing; their footwear is equally impressive. For example, the “Zara Chunky Sole Leather Ankle Boots” are perfect for the colder months.
These boots are not only stylish but also exceptionally comfortable. They’re a fantastic alternative to Forever 21’s footwear, which may lack the durability and style that Zara offers.
When it comes to summer footwear, the “Zara Leather Thong Sandals” are a hit. They’re a great replacement for the basic flip-flops you’d find at Forever 21, providing a trendy and comfortable option for those warm, sunny days.
Zara has a collection of sportswear that stands out too. If you’re into running or hitting the gym, the “Zara Sporty Leggings” are a fantastic choice. These leggings are made with high-performance fabric and come in a variety of colors, making them a great alternative to Forever 21’s activewear.
